In the past couple of days, we sent out a lot of rejections, mainly to Issue 13 submissions. We use a form letter: we simply don’t have time to respond personally to all the submissions we get. We got another query today asking about our policy on profanity. We get this question pretty frequently. It is always better to ask though, and we don’t mind the question at all - we appreciate that you’d take care to consider the details.

Normally I wouldn’t ever do this, but we received a query today that was so abysmal I was shocked at how many mistakes were made in just 66 words. Seriously, I was honestly flabbergasted. So in the hope that some writers might find helpful hints of what not to do, I’m going to deconstruct it. The name and email of the submitter will be omitted.

Just because I’ve been quiet doesn’t mean nothing’s been going on. In fact, we’ve been up until 1am the last few nights working.

Okay, that’s a slight exaggeration. But still, as near as I can tell, between the 2 of us, Kay and I read around 86,000 words today. We’ve just about gotten through all the submissions; then we’ll go back through our pared-down list and keep narrowing until we get to 5 (give or take 1). I was going to order the proof copy of issue 6 this morning. But I went back to have one last look - and I’m glad I did. One of the images that was set amidst the text had somehow been duplicated on the page; all the formatting was screwed up. Ack! So I fixed it ( Read more... )
